He never took a lesson. Self-taught, playing entirely by ear, Wes Montgomery worked a day job to support his family and built one of the most influential sounds in jazz guitar history at night, off the clock, on his own terms — thumb instead of pick, warm rounded octaves that made the guitar sing. This Halloween, we raise his spirit back to the stage for one more set.
